All right, now that you know about the different types of mailing lists and how to start building one, you’re finally ready to start building something else: your mailpiece. But first, keep it simple. This is a mailpiece and you’ve only got a few quick words to grab their attention. Next, you want to get your customers to respond, which means a strong call to action. That, and urgency. Try encouraging immediate action with a promotion or offering. Using our Milo & Mel example from last chapter: Remember, we’re promoting new summer looks with the Memorial Day sale. So we might say something like “Shop now at MiloandMel.com,” and “For a limited time only,” or “Now through Memorial Day weekend.” Speaking of, not all of us are writers and designers extraordinaire, but don’t worry, you can always hire an agency or USPS® affiliate to create your mailing piece for you. Just visit USPSDelivers.com to learn how. All right, so once you’ve got your message down, you need to figure out how to deliver it. And we’ve got a few format options: First up, postcards. They’re affordable and great for big sales and promotions. Next, self-mailers. These are usually single sheets of paper folded and sealed, so they can be mailed without an envelope. They’re affordable, easy to print and easy to produce. And finally, if you’re a talker and have a lot to show or say, flats are another great option. Bigger than letter-size mailpieces, they can be envelopes, self-mailers, brochures or catalogs. Okay, you’re now just one video away from creating your first mailpiece.
